Frequently Asked Questions

  • Senior division orchestras are completely remote and will have video auditions due on May 31st. Junior Division string will have a solo video audition due on May 31st and in-person auditions in early June. All percussion, and other select instruments will have only in-person auditions in early June. Please visit www.aypo.org/auditioninformation for more information.

  • For any in-person auditions, a link to sign-up will send out in May 2024.

  • Learn more about our programs and ensembles here, and decide which orchestra might be the best fit for you. AYPO's intention is to place students in the most advanced and appropriate orchestra for their musical growth. All applicants may be invited to join any orchestra up to the orchestra for which they audition.

  • Yes, but you will only be offered membership for one instrument, if qualified. The judges will place you according to your audition performance, as well as the needs of each orchestra. If you are applying on two instruments, you will need to fill out two different applications and pay two application fees.

  • Video auditions will be due May 31st. Please visit the audition information page for more detailed information. Audition videos submitted without an audition application will not be viewed. Applications are due May 1st.

  • Memorization of music is not required.

  • No, but musicians are welcome to submit their solo video submission with accompaniment.

  • For any audition, we encourage all applicants to dress professionally, as you will be auditioning in front of conductors, artistic staff, and guest jurors, even when via video.

  • Typically, musicians are notified via email within 2-3 weeks following the video audition submission deadline.

  • Please see the tuition and financial aid page for detailed information regarding each program's tuition.

  • Yes, need-based and merit-based financial aid is available for all students. Applications for financial aid can be found on the tuition page.

  • Stay tuned for detailed information on rehearsal and concert schedules and locations for the season. In the past, seasons rehearsals for all are held on Monday nights from September through May and at Marshall High School (7731 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA) and Kilmer Middle School (8100 Wolftrap Rd, Vienna, VA) and Langley High School (6520 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA). Orchestras and ensembles rehearsals can last between 1-hour to 2.5-hours.

  • All American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras' members are expected to take an active part in their school music programs.

    Participation in school music programs is strongly supported by AYPO, strengthening and enhancing the students in their development within the school community and in their progress through the AYPO ensembles.

    Musicians with extraordinary circumstances that prevent participation in their school music program are required to submit a waiver. Homeschooled musicians are exempt from this requirement. Misrepresentation of a musician's participation status in thier school program is cause for dismissal.
